Wow. That's an amazing first post and an increbible story. You should be very proud of yourself. I hope that Omi would have been touched and amazed to know that total strangers were moved by her story. I am sorry for your familes loss, but how wonderful to put her tale down in black and white for future generations. Family history is so important.
Loved this blog.....I had a German Grandmother....although she did not suffer as much as this.....my mother is German, born in Berlin and evacuated at the beginning of WW2. I have always been interested in the stories of ordinary German people at this time in history. Thank you for this insight and well done. Your Omi would have been proud.
I was in tears reading this. Suffering the like of which in in the EU now seems unfathomable. So pleased to have met her. She was clearly extremely proud of you as she should be. Much love to you, your mother and the family.. Dominic
Peter, what a fitting tribute to 'Omi', and, obviously, a sad loss: my deepest sympathies. Despite having a headline knowledge on the World War tragedy I had no idea about the detail. Valuable and illuminating it is that you have shared it by recording its importance, thank you.
As i would expect Peter, a wonderfully erudite tribute to your Grandmother on a personal level and a superbly articulated historical document too. As always it is the lives of the ordinary people caught up in world events that truly reflect the nature and effects of those events. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and your Grandmother's life with us. Richard xx
